Welcome to Our Lady of Guadalupe School Second Grade Flat Stanley Project

September 24th, 2008

Hello World!

The second grade class recently finished reading the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. In the story, Stanley, the main character, is flattened by a bulletin board that falls on top of him while he is sleeping. Luckily, he isn’t hurt, just flattened. Later in the story, Flat Stanley wanted to visit some friends in California, so his parents folded him up, put him in an envelope and mailed him to California. After a nice visit, his friends sent him back to his family.

We have created our own Flat Stanleys for a special project and we need your help! The children will be sending Flat Stanley to friends and family who live some distance away from the San Francisco Bay Area to host him in their town or city.

As a host you can take Flat Stanley to local areas of interest and to different events. We ask that you host Flat Stanley for at least 5 days. After his visit, you can send Flat Stanley back to us and tell us about his visit.

Here is some information we would like you to include in Flat Stanley’s journal:

Who sent Flat Stanley to you
Dates of his visit
Your name (optional)
Your email (optional)
Place of his visit (city, state, country, etc.)
What is special to your location?
What was the weather like?
What did Flat Stanley do while he was there?
Other interesting facts about this location?

Please feel free to add any information you think would enhance this learning opportunity for the children.

Although it is not necessary, the students love getting pictures and postcards from Stanley.

You may send your responses in by mail, email (mchu@olgweb.org) or by this blog site (http://grade2.olgweb.org/flatstanley/?page_id=13).  You must be registered to contribute to this site, and all postings will be moderated.

This project will run through April 30, 2009 and the children will track Flat Stanley on a map. Currently, an online map is being developed, and you will be able to see your journal entries and those of others soon.

Thank you for your participation in this wonderful learning experience for Our Lady of Guadalupe’s second grade class.
